This is something I’ve been wanting to make for a long time. I’ve got a coworker - a younger fellow. He’s super-enthusiastic, and a hoot to work with. Before lockdown, he used to play Dungeons and Dragons with his friends with some frequency. I wanted to show some sort of appreciation for what he brings to work, so I made him a Dungeons and Dragons dice box - a thing he can use to store all his D&D dice, miniatures, and whatever else he wants to put it it.
I’ve never worked with leather before, but needed some way to keep the lid shut, but it was too thin to put a clasp on it. The wood came from a tree that was cut down locally, and that I milled with a chainsaw mill. It was my third time trying hand-cut dovetails.
Something occurred to me a few days ago. I wonder if we could do some sort of charity auction for that Oppo member who’s house may have burned down. I’d be willing to make something like this and auction it off, and give the proceeds to a good cause. Think anyone else would be game for something like that?

Nice work and sure he'll be stoked !
I wish I made the time to do more finish woodworking, that and I want a dado blade for my table saw.

Hey that is awesome! Nice work! I’m a container freak and love pretty much anything that you can store stuff in and or make it organized.

Oddly enough, I never used my table saw for this. Chainsaw to mill the log, band saw to cut it into smaller pieces, hand plane for smoothing, and chisels and a hand saw for the joinery.
I do need to get my table saw back from my brother. I have a chest of drawers that needs to be made
(ideally before the end of the year).

Very nice!
I’d be willing to chip in some to a GoFundMe or something.

That’s a nice looking box. I love the leather strap. Adds a lot of class. I would add some carrying handles on the sides. Those could be made with the same leather if you have enough left.

I have a dado blade and am too lazy to use it for the very small amount of woodworking I tend to do. It doesn’t help that my table saw is in storage.

That leather strap takes this from just impressive woodworking to an impressively well rounded finished product. I love it! Such a nice thoughtful gesture too.
I haven’t really heard any updates about the fires from them.

I already had the chance to give it to him, so no side handles. But that would have been a good idea. He was thrilled nonetheless.

That looks amazing. It's the sort of thing I want to build but just can't

I wouldn’t say “can’t”. This is coming from someone who never too shop class in high school. Even a few basic hand tools will get you pretty far (a set of chisels and a saw - both can be had for <$50 in total).

Nicely done, Sir; nicely done. I wish you’d thrown your keys or something into the tray to give a sense of scale.

That looks fantastic!
A little charity auction isn't a bad idea at all. I'd be game to build something. I'm not sure what, but something.

I actually don’t own a dado blade. My little contractor saw doesn’t have a long enough arbor for one anyway.
I do need to get my table saw back from my brother before I can really start my next project - a dresser.

Coming from a shop teacher, I take that as the utmost complement!
I wonder if you could convince your students to make some scrap wood cutting boards or something.

I’m in on this....not sure what I could build (that someone would want!) , but maybe we can donate stuff to be auctioned and then send the cash?

I definitely mean it as a compliment. I've actually never done any hand joinery like that.
Cutting boards are a good idea. That would be simple enough.

That's sort of what I was thinking - even put the items up for auction on eBay, then donate the money.
